A Slow Road to a Great Meal - Abilene to Council Grove

Yes, it’s true.  The Kansas we know and love is very hilly.  Today, we took it easy, since the road surfaces were mostly rock chip and v-e-r-y    v-e-r-y    s-l-o-w.   There were lots of hills and no glides on the down slopes due to road friction and head wind.  Oh well. It’s all part of the ride.  Rob was good to Diane.  He shielded her from the wind.  She now calls him “mi Capitan, el Toro.”
Despite its challenges, it was a good ride.  One thing that made it very special is Diane’s brother, Frank. He made a trip to a bike store and bought us new tires, tubes and chains.  Then Frank drove to a health food store and bought Diane GF bread.  And best of the best, he is meeting us in Ottawa tomorrow, hauling us to his house where Rob will upgrade the bikes with the new equipment.  And we will go out for sushi!!  Hurrah!
Now more about the day:  Our route took us along and across the Santa Fe Trail, and ended at the Cottage House Hotel, a lovely bed and breakfast.  Dinner was at the Trail Days Café, the  best we have had since Lava Hot Springs.   Rob had buffalo, Diane, elk, both were served with a wonderful mint spiced salad, unsweetened cherry ice tea and side dishes.  All homemade and most delicious.  Plus we received a brief history lesson from the owners.  An interesting fact:  The proprietor’s first cousin is married to Bob Keppel!!  It is indeed a small world.
The real "El Toro"!

Biking to Council Grove the last place to buy supplies along the Santa Fa Trail.

You are looking at a sure sign you have arrived in the midwest farm country. Do you know what it is?       Need another hint?  It's called as an Osage Orange.

Now for your art moment of the day. First a piece of Kansas folk art brought to you by the AGO Team.

Followed by the Art Deco Bank building in Herrington, Ks.

And lastly, Diane's and the AGO Team's new favorite cook.
Good Night from Diane and Rob snug in their Council Grove B&B.
