A Quick Ride: Motivated by Rain and Fire Ants - Houston to Columbus.

A strong biking day, though the stats don’t reflect it.  The plan was to outrun the rain, threatened at both Houston in the morning and Columbus in the afternoon.  We duly executed the plan—don’t know whether it rained in Houston today, but it did rain in Columbus after we were settled in our motel.  The highlight of the day was crossing the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway.   This waterway has an interesting history, including litigation, reflected both at the foregoing link and here.  What we saw was quite remarkable.   We will add to our list of sighted animals, both wild and domesticated. Today added emu and fire ants, the latter up close and personal, since we were both stung by them while we sat on a shaded slope for our lunch break.
Tomorrow we head into Alabama, and if things go well, we will spend five days and four nights in the state.
We start the day looking for signs of the threatened rain....   ...seeing none...
...Diane scoots us down country roads toward West Point, MS.

Then she rips us east down US 50.
Along the way, Rob demonstrates how to eat an avocado and refried beans on the road.
(That is before the Fire Ants decide his bottom has a certain culinary appeal.)

Then we come upon the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway ......
....with its beatiful sloughs.
(The AGO Team felt the need to pay proper homage to this highly ligitated water system.)
Tomorrow we enter the Pecan state, Alabama. Diane and Rob
